The need for open debate of health-related information
Open debate and discussion of health-related information is an essential component to the understanding and development of medical science.
Health-related information is continuously evolving. There is a need to disseminate this information so that improved recommendations and strategies for promotion of health and wellbeing, including treatment of injuries and diseases, can be evaluated by healthcare professionals and provided to the general public. Information is disseminated through traditional means, such as direct communication from healthcare professionals to their patients, as well as non-traditional methods, such as through social media.
Regardless of whether the dissemination of health-related information is between healthcare professionals or patients, is traditional or non-traditional, it is essential that open dialog is maintained. This includes the consideration and discussion of differing interpretations of data, alternate hypotheses, and evolving analyses. By its nature, scientific evidence is continually progressing and developing. This is perhaps more noticeable within medical research due to inherent limitations and restrictions on experimentation and research methods. As a result, what may be considered accurate and reliable at one point in time may well be later found to be inaccurate. The opposite is true as well. It should also be considered that the underlying process of scientific inquiry and research is to question what is believed to be known. This involves an attempt to prove why something may be false, with the inability to do so leading to further confidence that the finding is accurate.
An open dialog and respectful debate of ideas and theories is essential to better understand the issues under study. Questioning of commonly held theories is needed in order to correct and revise what may be incomplete or inaccurate and to lead to an improved overall understanding of any issue. Without challenging currently accepted paradigms, progress cannot be made in any aspect of medical care.
While an open dialog may, at times, lead to provision of inaccurate or misleading information, it is preferred that such viewpoints be considered and then debated with better evidence if they are inconceivable. What may be thought of as misleading or inaccurate at one point in time may, in fact, with further study be more accepted or found to be correct. At the time of initial debate, it is not possible to know which theories will turn out to be most representative and closest to the truth. As such, it is important to respectfully consider all presented ideas. The best rebuttal to misleading information is the provision of more accurate evidence, rather than summarily disregarding those ideas which do not fit with preconceived notions.
The evidence-driven philosophy of House Call Media provides this paradigm for the promotion and growth of health-related social media platforms. The healthcare trained social media management provided by House Call Media allows for the details and nuances of health-related information to be integrating within social media and growth strategies. Engagement with other professionals and patients is, therefore, more specific to health-related content and reflective of an understanding of the underlying research and its potential limitations. Incorporation of evidence-driven content allows accurate and current information to be provided, while evolving concepts and theories are integrated as they become available. This process allows the healthcare professional to provide as accurate and current content as possible, thereby developing the reputation for reliability amongst the target audience.
